…The initial step of decision making is the ability to gather the available information and organize for use. The procedure is referred to as a decision- making assessment. The intuitive and analytical decision-making approaches use assessment to initiate each process. A common acronym, METT-T, provides an organizational parallel for the mental process that occurs during assessment.

Marines use the acronym, METT-T, as the doctrinal standard to conduct this assessment. METT-T represents the following considerations.

METT-TSL is an enlarged version of METT-T to meet the demands of planning and operational requirements for larger or higher level organizations and operations. The capability of METT-TSL to capture high-level requirements in a simplistic format makes it ideal for operational and strategic level applications. METT-TSL represents the following considerations

Estimating the situation or conducting an assessment using METT-TSL supports both approaches to decision making. As the environmental factors change in the intuitive decision-making approach, additional assessments are conducted. Analytical applications use METT-TSL during each step to ensure that the data used to create the options is pertinent and correct…

  1. Speaking from experience, this is a manual that is guaranteed to make any troopers eyes glaze over in record time. The problem with things like this is that it is too many acronyms, and too much information. The training and knowledge you can get by using the manual is great, it’s just that it is presented in a way that will leave the manual collecting dust. By the time a soldier reads the introduction, and gets to the meat of the subject, half the class will do anything to escape the rest of it. I have seen this many, many, times. It is grossly repetitive. A five paragraph field operations order is the same thing, and uses one chapter to explain itself in the Ranger Handbook. Great Idea, dealt a death blow by wordy manual writers. Soldiers do not remember or use things they don’t like.

  2. Sean nails the problem with that sort of book, for the reason of too much complexity. For a possible more real-world version of how METT-T planning might work out, remember the WRSA post of late this past summer, when input was solicited as to how a person thrust into a leadership position would deal with a small and mixed-skills-and-abilities group in the first minutes, hours, days, and weeks.

    That request for input, and its long and educational string of responses, brought out the thorny problem: How’s a person going to deal with the arnichists while planning quasi-military operations that seek to save most peoples’ lives in the short term? Most time will be spent herding cats, and in dealing with cats that cannot be herded.

    Some here may remember the classic RCR comment about the decision-making process, when your best bud decides that he doesn’t want to play the G game anymore. That, from an old and non-frequented, generally dead board, comment is probably still up on that board. Was from six years or so ago.

    A leader would be lucky enough if he could recognize how to set up and place the right people into shops 1-4 … on the fly… and condense those shops’ functions to meet what’s available in terms of people and skills available. This is reactive talk. Maybe, after the reactive stuff has been done, leaders may be able to talk the METT-T talk.

  5. Go back to June 13 on this board, read the eighty-some comments, and learn about herding cats… this, when a person is thrust up into a leadership spot of a mixed group. The arnichists as they reply in comments on the June 13 post, are still pretty hazy even when they have a boxcar of munitions to broker, but still have their own ideals of “no leadership” to maintain.
