  1. Good MRE info. Thanks for posting.
Reminiscing, I miss C-Rations. I actually LIKED the Ham and Lima beans, and the cold Scrambled Eggs and Ham. None of them were bad.

But the BEST, though I didn’t know it at the time, were PIR’s. Of those, the dried shrimp with peppers, and the dried Asian sausage, were absolutely outstanding. Kudos to Mr. Conrad ‘Ben Baker, a certified genius for inventing them for indig. Along with the original Bata Boots.

I ate my last canned MCI (C-Rat) in the USMC in 1980, in 1981 we got our first MRE and could not for the life of us understand what shit they were trying to feed us. They were awful. Except for the hash brown bar.
I now have current issue MRE’s and enjoy most of them, but I too miss the ham&eggs and canned pineapple, the pound cake and peaches is still divine (for field cooking) and even drool over a can of C-Rat spaghetti heated on a heat tab and cracker can stove. When you were starving out in the soaking wet bush, that was a feast!
We ate some of the old VN era freeze dried LRRP meals (early Mountain House meals) when I was at Counter Guerrilla Warfare School at Ft. Bragg in ’76, and I’m still a big fan of the current Mtn House meals when I go backpacking today. They are truly awesome trail food. The only thing I can’t find is their legendary corn flake bar that came in the LRRP meals.

  2. When I attended AIT school in the 70s I was once issued a C Rat pack with a mfg date stamped sometime in the 40s. MREs have improved greatly during the GWOT but they still make you constipated after a steady diet of them in a couple of weeks. My all time favorite field rat is LRPs. You can actually gain weight in the field eating them.
