Civil War?

01276v-1

Civil War?
By Michael Hill

America in 2016 is a tinderbox waiting for a spark. The two sides have divided up nicely and there seems no room for compromise. The inevitable conflict, which draws closer with each passing day, will not be a strictly regional one as we had in the 1860s.

While there will be a regional element to it – meaning, for instance, that the South, the rural Midwest, and the mountain West will be allies – the conflict will be based more on worldview and race/ethnicity predicated largely on a rural-urban divide. One might do just as well to call it a general traditional-progressive divide.

On the urban/progressive side you have most of the basic American institutions, including nearly every level of government, especially the federal; all of the mainline and even some of the evangelical churches; the academy; the elite media; big business; the foundations; minority groups (especially Jews and blacks); and a host of anti-white whites. The strength of this faction lies in the large urban areas and other centers of education and government. They control the current “system” that runs the USA regime.

On the rural/traditionalist side are a scattering of government officials and personnel (including military and law enforcement), particularly on the State and local levels; the old-line Protestant churches, many of the Orthodox churches, and renegade pre-Vatican Two Roman Catholics; homeschooling families; right-wing internet news sources; small business owners; and what we call “normal” white people whose ancestors were counted among America’s founding stock. The geographic strength of this faction lies in the rural and some “conservative” suburban areas. This group is currently out of power but still controls a large amount of wealth, including skills and productive real estate. This group is also more religious, self sufficient, and has a tradition of gun ownership and military service.

There are a large and growing number of divisions upon which compromise is neither possible nor desirable: immigration, abortion, homosexual and trans-gender “rights;” gun control; crime and punishment; the minority question; foreign policy and war; Christianity in the public square; among many others. Urban progressives want to use the US regime to force their worldview upon their opponents and curtail dissent and opposition to the enactment of their worldview. Heretofore, rural traditionalists were content merely to be “left alone” to pursue what they defined as the “good life” – an unfettered pursuit of the “American Dream” of freedom and prosperity for themselves and their posterity.

But when one side – the urban progressive, who slowly gained control of the institutions of power and influence – began using the force of law and government to dispossess the other, that “other” – the rural traditionalist – began slowly to rouse itself as an act of survival. This process has gradually played itself out over the last half century, from the mid-1960s to the present.

At the heart of the urban progressive arsenal were three primary weapons: political correctness (aka cultural Marxism); non-white immigration (beginning with the 1965 Immigration and Naturalization Act); and the civil rights movement, largely writ to include feminists and homosexuals. All were designed first and foremost to foster that paralyzing and diabolical monster called “white guilt.” Indeed, white guilt has served as an effective retardant to traditional whites organizing for their own self defense over the past fifty years. Now, however, the evil spell is being broken as the urban progressives can no longer disguise their intentions. Even politically disinterested whites are beginning to see the proverbial hand writing on the wall.

So here at the beginning of 2016, another presidential election year but one that is shaping up to be anything but normal, we stand on the verge of open conflict, awaiting only a match (or as I used to hear old men say, a “lucifer”–quite an appropriate name!) to set it off. Both sides have stored up sufficient anger and hatred for the other. When the conflagration does come, it will be, I believe, hellish . . . and thorough. Much too much has been written, said, and done on both sides to expect much mercy either way.

Those who allow this genie out of the bottle had best be sure of their course, for once she’s out she will stay out until the task is completed. One side wins and one loses. No quarter asked and none given. The black flag flies. When the dust settles and the carrion crows have picked the last bones clean, America’s future will have been decided: She will be in the hands of those descended from the founding stock or she will be in control of an alien power. My question to the urban progressives is this: are you ready to unleash this hell and take the consequences?

I have been accused before by those on the left of “wanting a race war.” I want neither a race war nor a civil war; I would prefer a peaceful separation, a divorce of the contending parties, secession. Our goal in The League of the South for the past two decades has been a free and independent South. We have stated many times our sincere hope this can be accomplished peacefully. But I am a realist; if war comes, we will be ready to fight for our people and our lands.

In my opinion, the urban progressives will start this conflict. Why? Because as one of their heroes, V.I. Lenin, once insisted, all avenues are open if they advance the “revolution.” This includes lies, deceit, theft, and murder. In other words, the left has no moral compunction against doing whatever is necessary to destroy their enemies and enact their objectives.

We on the side of the rural traditionalists are bound by a moral code and the concept of “just war.” However, our reluctance to start a conflict ought not be mistaken for our inability to finish one. As the great Jackson said, once my sword is drawn, I throw away the scabbard.

My advice to the leaders of the urban progressive faction is simple: back off and do not start this conflict. Your leftist utopia is not worth the cost in blood, destruction, and human misery. Let’s have a peaceful “divorce” and be done with each other.

Your guess is as good as mine as to what might provide the actual spark for this American tinderbox. But in a presidential election year with major candidates (Trump, Sanders, and Hillary the Unindicted) far outside the mainstream of “normal” electoral politics and a persistent threat to destroy “politics as usual,” who knows?

Keep your eyes open and your powder dry.

I respectfully submit that what we know for facts now is all we will know for facts for some significant period of time, if ever:

2. A good man died at the hands of the Oregon State Police and their allies.

Shawna Cox Account/Malheur Link Dump 31JAN

Ammon Bundy(R), leader of a group of armed anti-government protesters leaves with Shawna Cox(C), after speaking to the media as other members look on at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge near Burns, Oregon January 4, 2016. The FBI on January 4 sought a peaceful end to the occupation by armed anti-government militia members at a US federal wildlife reserve in rural Oregon, as the standoff entered its third day. The loose-knit band of farmers, ranchers and survivalists -- whose action was sparked by the jailing of two ranchers for arson -- said they would not rule out violence if authorities stormed the site, although federal officials said they hope to avoid bloodshed. How To Defeat Your Enemies

Statement by Greg Bretzing, Special Agent in Charge, FBI Portland, 1/28/2016

sac portland

Via FlashAlert:

Clarification: We’ve received a few questions about the date/time stamp in the left corner of the video. Pilots use Zulu Time (also known as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)) when they fly. Zulu time is 8 hours ahead of Pacific Standard Time (PST)… thus the date/time stamp would show just after midnight for January 27, 2016.

Good evening. My name is Greg Bretzing, and I am the Special Agent in Charge of the FBI in Oregon.

We have quite a bit of information to share with you tonight concerning the occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.

First, I would like to confirm that as of this morning one more person left the refuge through a checkpoint. We believe there are four others who currently remain on the refuge. Since the establishment of checkpoints, a total of nine people have left the refuge. Of those, the FBI released six and arrested three.

Secondly, I would like to confirm that the FBI and Oregon State Police have narrowed the containment zones. This was done to make it more convenient for those who live and work in the immediate area of the refuge to go about their business. To this end, Highway 205 is now open in both directions.

There has been some media reporting that the situation at the refuge is resolved. That is NOT true. Again, we still believe there are occupiers on the refuge. The negotiators continue to work around the clock to talk to those four people in an effort to get them to come out peacefully.

Thirdly, we know there is quite a bit of interest related to the events as they occurred on Highway 395 on Tuesday afternoon. We know there are various versions of what occurred during this event: most inaccurate, some inflammatory. To that end, we want to do what we can to lay out an honest and unfiltered view of what happened and how it happened.

FBI agents and Oregon State Police troopers were involved in this operation. During this operation, OSP troopers utilized deadly force due to their proximity to LaVoy Finicum as the situation unfolded. Because of this, the Deschutes County Major Incident Team is conducting the outside review of the shooting per Oregon State law and established protocols. Because of that on-going investigation, I will not be able to answer every question you have… but hopefully we will give the public some clarity as to what occurred.

At approximately 4:25 pm on Tuesday, January 26, 2016, FBI and OSP began a law enforcement action to bring into custody the people riding in two separate vehicles as they traveled between Burns and John Day. The FBI did have a plane in the air, and what I am about to show you is a video from that plane. A couple of notes about the video before we watch it.

*The plane is following the vehicles, and the camera sometimes pans from one vehicle to the other… a white truck in front and a jeep in back. At other times when the vehicles are in a fixed location, the plane is flying in a pattern over that location. Because of that flight pattern, there are portions where trees obscure what is happening. The details that I am about to provide to you are based both on an analysis of this video and some ground-level observations of agents and troopers on the scene.

*Because the operation lasted more than 25 minutes, we are showing you two of the most pertinent clips today. The entire unedited video from the start of the traffic stop through the surrender of all individuals will be available to the media and the general public on the FBI’s YouTube channel.

*Because I am using some very specific language to describe what is happening, the entire transcript of my comments will be posted to http://www.flashalertbend.net.

*I want to caution you that the video does show the shooting death of LaVoy Finicum. We realize that viewing that piece of the video will be upsetting to some people, but we feel that it is necessary to show the whole thing unedited in the interest of transparency.

The video picks up a few seconds before the FBI and OSP vehicles pull in behind the jeep — the second vehicle in line. The jeep quickly pulls to a stop while the white truck — driven by LaVoy Finicum — continues some distance up the road. Some law enforcement vehicles stay with the jeep while others continue following the white truck. Over a period of several minutes out of camera view, the following people exit the jeep without incident:

*The driver — who was not charged and will not be named
*Ammon Bundy
*Brian Cavalier

Looking at the white truck… about four minutes into the video … Ryan Payne exits through a back door. It’s difficult to see behind the trees, but in the lower right hand corner you can see him with his hands up being approached by the law enforcement officers and being taken into custody.

There is a period of approximately 3 minutes and 47 seconds where the truck sits on the road. We have edited it for time here, but it is available in the raw, unedited version on the FBI’s YouTube channel. Throughout this time, agents and troopers are providing verbal commands to the occupants to surrender. We can’t comment on what may have been going on in the truck at this time, but those details may come out later as part of the overall shooting investigation.

When we come back to the video, the white truck leaves the scene at a high rate of speed. It travels some distance… quickly approaching a vehicle roadblock in the roadway.

As the white truck approaches the roadblock, there is a spike strip across the road but it appears Finicum missed it as he attempted to drive around the roadblock. He nearly hits an FBI agent as he maneuvers to the left. The truck gets stuck in the snowbank.

Finicum leaves the truck and steps through the snow. Agents and troopers on scene had information that Finicum and others would be armed. On at least two occasions, Finicum reaches his right hand toward a pocket on the left inside portion of his jacket. He did have a loaded 9 mm semi-automatic handgun in that pocket.

At this time, OSP troopers shot Finicum.

Approximately 30 seconds after the shooting — law enforcement officers at the scene deployed flash bangs to disorient any other armed occupants. Shortly after that, they deployed less-lethal sponge projectiles with OC capsules. Those OC capsules would be similar to pepper spray.

Over a period of several minutes agents and troopers worked to safely remove the remaining truck occupants, and to take them into custody. Those people included:

*Ryan Bundy
*Shawna Cox
*And another woman, who was not arrested and will not be named

As soon as the agents and troopers were confident that they had addressed any further threats, they provided medical assistance to Finicum. That happened about 10 minutes after the shooting.
Agents and troopers did find 3 other loaded weapons inside the truck. They included two loaded .223 caliber semi-automatic rifles. There was also one loaded .38 special revolver.

Again, you can see the rest of this unedited video on the FBI’s YouTube channel.

Finally — again — I want to acknowledge the stress and disruption that the occupation of the refuge has caused has to the people of Harney County. We know this is difficult. We know that you want this concluded as soon as possible. We are doing everything we can to bring this to a resolution safely and quickly.

I have time for a few questions.

Bracken: Maoris, Moors and Migrants

maori

Maoris, Moors and Migrants: a history lesson for civilized humans facing an Ork invasion.

This section is copied from this link: http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/moriori

“Hundreds of years ago the Moriori, of the Chatham Islands, took a solemn vow of peace known as Nunuku’s Law. The decision to uphold this sacred law in the face of aggression in 1835 had tragic consequences. They were slaughtered, enslaved, and dispossessed of their lands. The Moriori lived on Chatham Island and Pitt Island, two islands in the Chatham Islands group, about 700 kilometers south-east of Wellington.

“Nunuku’s Law: Isolated from mainland New Zealand, the Moriori developed a unique culture based on a law of peace. This was called Nunuku’s Law, after the ancestor Nunuku-whenua. After seeing bloody conflict between the Hamata people and later arrivals, he banned murder and the eating of human flesh forever. After 1791, when the British ship Chatham called at Rēkohu, Moriori came into contact with Europeans and Māori who came as crew on sealing and whaling vessels. Some settled on the islands and lived alongside the Moriori. This relative peace was shattered in 1835 when Maoris from two tribes, both from Taranaki, arrived in the Chatham Islands in search of new territories and resources.

“In 1835, 24 generations after the Moriori chief Nunuku had forbidden war, the Moriori welcomed about 900 people from the two Māori tribes. Originally from Taranaki on New Zealand’s North Island, they had voyaged from Wellington on an overcrowded European vessel, the Rodney. They arrived severely weakened, but were nursed back to health by their Moriori hosts. However, they soon revealed hostile intentions and embarked on a reign of terror.

“Stunned, the Moriori called a council of 1,000 men at Te Awapātiki to debate their response. The younger men were keen to repel the invaders, and argued that even though they had not fought for many centuries, they outnumbered the newcomers two-to-one and were a strong people. But the elders argued that Nunuku’s Law was a sacred covenant with their gods and could not be broken. The consequences for Moriori were devastating.

“Although the total number of Moriori first slaughtered was said to be around 300, hundreds more were enslaved and later died. Some were killed by their captors. Others, horrified by the desecration of their beliefs, died of ‘kongenge’ or despair [often suicide by leaping from cliffs]. According to records made by their elders, 1,561 Moriori died between 1835 and 1863, when they were released from slavery. Many succumbed to diseases introduced by Europeans, but large numbers died at the hands of the Maoris. In 1862 only 101 remained. When the last known full-blooded Moriori died in 1933, many thought this marked the extinction of a race.”

The Maori and the Chatham Islanders

This section is from this link: http://www.fsmitha.com/h3/h43-pa4.htm

On Chatham Island, 800 kilometers east of New Zealand, lived the Moriori, who were related to the Maori. They were hunters and gatherers, sparse in population and, perhaps because they were few in number and isolated, they were unpracticed at warfare. In late 1835 about 900 Maori from New Zealand landed on Chatham Island. The Maori were armed with guns, clubs and axes. They announced to the Moriori that they were their slaves. Moriori chiefs conferred with each other and drew from their religious heritage. [Nunuku’s Law.] They offered the Maori friendship and a share of the island’s resources. The attempt to appease the Maori failed. The Maori began killing the Moriori, including women and children. The Maori put people in pens and feasted on the tender meat of Moriori children. A Maori conqueror described it:

“We took possession, in accordance with our customs and we caught all the people. Not one escaped. Some ran away from us. These we killed, and others we killed – but what of that? It was in accordance with our custom.”

The lesson of Chatham Island is that people who live in comfortable circumstances, for enough generations to forget the horrors of anarchy and total war, will often let down their guard to a fatal degree. The examples I will compare are Chatham Island in 1835, the Island of Plenty from my Alienork Way allegory, and Europe today. It is my observation, that in a well-calculated series of defined steps and expected responses, that alien Orks (taken from The Alienork Way) can overcome and subdue even an outwardly more affluent, powerful and successful society.

By the time the native people on Chatham Island (or on The Island of Plenty, or in Europe today) realize what mortal peril they are in, they have let in so many vicious Orks that they automatically present a grave threat to the native population at large. I would point to the widespread sex attacks in Cologne and across Europe on New Year’s Eve, as just one recent example of the threat posed by the Orks.

At the early and emerging point of danger in my Alienork allegory, the Orks can still be confronted, but the will of the public officials cannot be raised sufficiently high for them to order their forcible ejection. Politicians are natural delayers and compromisers, and the invading Orks exploit both weaknesses. When the peaceful islanders realize that three more young Ork males have arrived without asking permission, the islanders accept their presence as a fait accompli. The Orks simply show up, declare themselves to be refugees, and demand to be fed, parasites cynically exploiting the islanders’ own laws concerning the sharing of their bounty with anyone who has a need.

At that juncture, the Ork elder Amok and his three “nephews” could still have been defeated by the peaceful islanders, but only with an acceptance of the fact that doing battle would incur injuries and even deaths on both sides. But in the story of The Alienork Way, after the next moon, thirty more armed male Orks have arrived unbidden, and they are not long in giving the orders to the native islanders. Their code, defined as The Alienork Way, is enforced at sword point. The least sign of defiance or resistance is answered with beheadings and the taking of native women. Thus the larger and more affluent and outwardly more successful society of peaceful islanders can be subdued and enslaved by a smaller number of savagely vicious Ork invaders via a carefully plotted series of incremental steps.

Europe is now at the point in The Alienork Way when everybody agrees that the three “nephews” of Amok are a serious problem, and it looks like at least thirty more armed male Orks are on the way. With each fresh arrival of refugee “reinforcements,” local defensive measures will require even greater levels of violence to be successful. The difficult decision to forcibly eject the invaders is continually delayed. The “peaceful islanders,” today being played by the Europeans, keep putting off the inevitable, as thousands and thousands of male Orks arrive every day from the failed states comprising Orkistan.

Today, the European secular religion of multi-culturalism acts like Nunuku’s Law did on Chatham Island in 1835, disallowing a realistic appraisal of different cultures, and forbidding the adequate defense of Europe until it’s too late. The European version of Nunuku’s Law also prohibits ordinary citizens from owning suitable means of self-defense in the form of personally owned firearms, rendering them virtually helpless against Ork attacks.

At this writing in January of 2016, anyone who speaks of mass deportations of the Orks from Europe simply cannot be taken seriously. It’s far too late for that. Just watch the January 24 videos of the Calais migrant mobs sending the French police running in disorder. Multiply that street riot by a thousand when migrant violence breaks out simultaneously in dozens of Europeans cities in the form of a mass “Ork Rising.”

To see another infamous Ork Rising, you could watch the many security camera videos taken on New Year’s Eve in Cologne, directly in front of the train station and cathedral, but the German police erased all of them. Just like on Chatham Island, it’s much easier to ignore painful reality than it is to effectively confront it. Keep in mind that New Year’s Eve was only a warm up and a pep-rally for the Great Jihad of 2016. [Tet, Take Two] Like hive insects exuding chemical pheromone attack signals, these preparatory Ork Risings act as mass social signals, reinforcing the common Ork feeling of their own invincibility when massed in groups, as well as the complete inadequacy and inability of their European prey to stop them.

Now please imagine flash-mobs of hundreds or even thousands of male Orks, even if they are initially armed only with iron bars and knives. Each mob action seen on television sparks an even greater street turnout among the Orks as the wireless pheromone signals are transmitted among the collective Ork hive-mind. Jean Raspail wrote of this dynamic in ‘The Camp of the Saints’, and he asked, when will the European leaders give the order to open fire in defense of their culture? The answer is, never, and Europe is overrun by savages.

Like Nunuku’s Law on Chatham Island, the Law of Multi-Kulti-Uber-Alles will spell Europe’s doom.

My guess is that Europe will be lost to the Ork invaders, or at the very least, Europe will suffer a prolonged civil war on the measure of Lebanon, the Balkans and Syria at the height of those wars. Some cities will look like Sarajevo or Grozny in their very worst moments before this is all sorted out, that is, if the Orks are going to be defeated. The Moors invaded Spain in 711 and controlled the entire Iberian Peninsula by 788. It then took 700 years, (let that sink in, seven hundred years), for the Spanish reconquista to eject the Moors from Iberia. And the Spanish did it under the banner of the Christian cross, which was then a socially potent European rallying symbol.

Today, secular and virtually atheist Europeans will not have that rallying banner out in front to unite them in a common cause and to spur their desire for reconquista. The Europeans will lose badly when modern Middle-Eastern urban warfare tactics are employed against them with increasing frequency. These tactics will include car bombs, human bombs, IEDs, random sniper and even knife attacks, with some Mumbai, Beslan or Paris attacks thrown in.

Even today, very few Europeans have any idea of the total shit-storm directly ahead of them. In this type of vicious war, the Orks will exploit even temporary tactical victories to maximize the immediate slaughter. For example, if a squad of Orks takes over an office building for even a few hours, they will kill every male prisoner out of hand. (Sometimes giving quarter to those among the captured who can recite the Shahada prayer in Arabic.) Then they will rape the women, even if they have only a few hours left to live. By doing so, they are gloriously living out their sick fantasy of holy jihad. If they die, they are vaulted straight into their promised perpetual orgy with seventy-two virgins in Ork heaven. If they survive, they will attack again and again, until they are put down like rabid hyenas.

When these types of attacks become a weekly or a daily event, and when even the life-saving first responders are massacred with delayed-action bombs, will the first responders stop responding? The police and the military will suffer high attrition, and personnel burnout will come fast. Who will respond to bomb scenes when another bomb might go off in fifteen minutes or two hours? I am only relating the standard tactics now in use across the Middle East, the home of many of Europe’s so-called refugees.

The absence of rapid police or military response means that every European in any type of structure must be ready for local self-defense without expecting outside help or rescue. Europeans in isolated buildings and homes will be susceptible to what may be thought of as savage Comanche Indian raids launched anytime, anywhere, against anybody. Consider that a typical encounter will consist of ten Orks armed with (at least) knives and iron bars attempting to force a home invasion against a barricaded French or German family. Can the family keep them out? Even if they can, for a while, what about follow-up arson attacks, such as the one used against the Benghazi consulate’s “safe room?”.

This dreadfully unhappy picture is Europe’s future, due to the unbelievably misguided European policy of inviting millions of savage and barbaric Orks to live among them. History will regard the once-avoidable Great Jihad of 2016 as the predictable result of one of the most colossally stupid series of decisions ever taken by any group of leaders, anywhere, ever. At least the peaceful Chatham Islanders did not actively seek to invite the bloodthirsty Maoris to invade their homeland. Today’s European political leaders have invited this great catastrophe upon their own people. History will not forgive them for launching the unnecessary slaughter that is ahead for Europe.

Roberts: Organization II

Organizational Considerations II
Bill Roberts

I mentioned in the first Organizational Considerations that I intended to use the U.S. Army Infantry model for organization. With perhaps some minor modifications early on, that will hold true from here out. Also, this will not be a Ft. Leavenworth Command and General Staff course. Just another overview but with some added specific detail to guide your developmental process.

Essentially, the unit of Infantry that most people are familiar with is the Squad. Doctrinally this is composed of a Staff Sergeant and 8 – 12 soldiers. The Squad however, is actually composed of Fire Teams. These are 4 man elements with a Sergeant as the leader. We will start this organizational build at this level. Now, if right out of the gate you have more than 4 members of your group, GREAT! Build a second or third Fire Team. If you have less, recruiting to the magic number of 4 will be helpful.

As previously stated, 1 of these 4 is the leader, the rest followers. You may choose to follow the Infantry rank structure or use other titles. I don’t recommend Comrade but to each their own. The other benefit of having 4 or more individuals it that our real focus is to build a cadre/staff to support the growth of the unit. With 4 individuals you have the Leader, an S1/4, an S2/3 and another, who at this point, I would include with the S2/3 as there is going to be a lot going on in that arena.

If you do not have much in the way of doctrinal resources it would be good to procure them at this point. These will take the shape of Field Manuals, Technical Manuals and the like that focus on the main issues of the cadre/staff. While most of these can be found in a .pdf format on line, having a printed copy or copies is a much better solution. Maybe you have someone with access to a printer and can simply print out the .pdf and put it in a binder. That is a satisfactory solution. Much easier to flip from page to page and tab the hard copy than try to sort through screens on the computer. Don’t forget about that whole electricity/dropping the computer thing.

What manuals should you have? I would consider the following list to be a start and definitely not complete or all inclusive. Also, don’t be too concerned about when the manual was published. Anything from the early 1980s forward is going to fine for your purposes. FM 6-0, Commander and Staff Organization and Operations; FM 34-3, Intelligence Analysis; FM 34-130, Intelligence Preparation of the Battlefield (IPB); FM 101-5-1, Operational Terms and Graphics; FM 101-5, Staff Organization and Operations (can be used in lieu of FM 6-0); ADRP 5-0, The Operations Process (not high priority but useful); from here you will be able to determine what addition manuals you would like in you library. There are some non-military manuals that are a compilation of several military manuals and are quite good. The cost in the neighborhood of $30.00 each. The 3 I would recommend are: The Battle Staff, The Army Operations and Doctrine, The Small Unit Tactics; all are authored by Norman M. Wade and published by Lightning Press.

Regardless of what references you choose, they will allow you to develop a unit and staff/cadre without reinventing the wheel so to speak. Do not get overwhelmed by the volume of information. I will be stepping through it from this end and you can follow that lead or go your own way. The choice is yours.

What do these folks that compose the staff/cadre do? What is their function? In a large organization the Leader will have a Primary Staff or Coordinating Staff, a Special Staff and perhaps a Personal Staff. While most explanations of staff functions are quite lengthy, this will be a synopsis. I will only be dealing here with the Leader and Primary Staff. For the full blown explanation of each area refer to one of the manuals I cited above.

I’ll start with the Leader. His function is very straight forward. He is the seat of Command and Control. By whatever virtue he became the Leader, he gained the Authority to command. Of course with that comes the Responsibility and Accountability for his actions and the welfare of his people. The Authority he can delegate to a member(s) of the staff if he is so inclined. The Responsibility and Accountability remain always with the Leader. The saying was: A Leader is responsible for everything his people do and fail to do. That is paraphrasing of course. The Leader should provide leadership and guidance to the staff, cadre or unit. As the unit expand there may be the addition of an Executive Officer or XO. That position is just a number 2 leadership position in most units and is available to take the primary leadership role in the absence of the Leader. Most usually this individual fills the role of Chief of Staff in a staff and coordinates all staff functions for the Leader.

The S1 (Personnel) could also be referred to as the Director of Personnel. This position is responsible for all matters concerning human resources to include personnel readiness, personnel services and headquarters management. Some specific examples would include recruitment, retention and replacement of unit personnel and advising the Leader on all matters concerning personnel.

The S2 (Intelligence) is the principal staff position for all matters concerning intelligence, counterintelligence, security operations, and intelligence training. These will include but are not limited to: collecting, processing, producing, and disseminating intelligence and supervising the personnel security program.

The S3 (Operations) could be titled as the Director of Plans, Operations and Training. From the title you get a pretty good idea of what the duties of this position entail and just how critical it is to the success of the unit.

The S4 (Logistics) is responsible for coordinating the logistics integration of supply, maintenance, transportation, and services for the unit. This includes advising the Leader on the quantity of each class of supply required to sustain the unit for a specified period of time, the maintenance necessary to sustain unit equipment in operable condition and the transportation requirements necessary to move the unit.

The importance of beginning the organization with a basic functioning staff cannot be over emphasized. The staff will allow the unit to function and grow in a planned and orderly manner. Even a Special Forces Detachment overlays the basic staff functions on members of the team. It allows for easier planning and coordination with higher staff sections.

Now that we have looked at the very basics needed for the staff/cadre we must revisit these same individuals as the first unit or if the numbers hold, the first fire team. Here the staff takes on a different role. Previously they were the planners and now they have put on their other hats and have to be prepared to execute the plans they developed. This is where you will see if the Intelligence prepared by the S2, the Plans, Operations and Training the S3 developed and the Supply and Maintenance structure the S4 came up with actually works. Let’s hope the work was put into the planning that was needed.

This is where we are going to determine if the various levels established across the supply classes is enough, not enough, or too much. I imagine the first action is to identify the Classes of Supply.

Class I – Food, rations, and water
Class II – Clothing
Class III – Petroleum, oils, and lubricants
Class IV – Fortification and barrier materials
Class V – Ammunition
Class VI – Personal Items
Class VII – Major End Items
Class VIII – Medical supplies, minimal amounts
Class IX – Repair Parts
Class X – Miscellaneous supplies

All of these may not be initially required but most all of them will be eventually required. At what levels these will be stocked for the unit is a decision only the unit can make. For example, everyone’s favorite Class V – Ammunition. What is the unit’s requirement for ammunition? Depending on what the unit is preparing for it may be a few dozen rounds of “guard” ammo or it may be several hundred per individual. This same rationale applies to all the classes of supply. Quantity will be incumbent on mission requirements/plans.

This has been a simplification of the Staff/Cadre necessary to successfully begin a unit. In addition to all the “things” a unit needs the most important one is probably knowledge. Get the resources I sited to begin with, get intimately familiar with them and then start building. I am available off line for questions.

Until then be safe.
