    Denninger has gone batshit crazy. His post effectively defending health insurance companies is simply nuts. Health insurance companies don’t just make a profit. They are a virtually perfect fit to the definition of rent-seeking.
    Definition: Rent-seeking is the use of the resources of a company, an organization or an individual to obtain economic gain from others without reciprocating any benefits to society through wealth creation. An example of rent-seeking is when a company lobbies the government for loan subsidies, grants or tariff protection. These activities don’t create any benefit for society; they just redistribute resources from the taxpayers to the company.
    So, profits and dividends to stockholders are just a tiny slice of what an insurance company consumes. They also consume labor, resources, fuel, electricity, paper, supplies, etc… all to push paper and enrich execs. That is all a parasitic loss of the money that “should” be going to improving patient health.

    The guy has totally lost it. Low carb, of course. Only idiots dispute that claim. Paleo, Primal, etc are what your body was designed to eat. You don’t need a crazy person to tell you that.

  2. This. Paleo or a simar flavor of it works wonders. I used to be 340 and in awful shape. I dropped 100 pounds going straight veggie for a while now maintaining a paleo-esque diet with he occasional cheat. I will forever pay for some of my health choices by having to learn the hard way but better late then never.

  3. It aint just low carb-it’s high fat high protein lots of meat and dairy fresh fish,somendried beans, rice,nuts some fruits and veggies.
    It’s all about cutting out refined/processed foods.
    If you grow your own veggies,either have some fruit trees or access to fresh fruit, shoot a few deer or an elk a year, catch some fish from clean water- then you’re light years ahead of over 90% of the population. If you have access to fresh milk and locally made cheeses you’re even better off.

    • Processed foods are a killer. i began losing weight just cutting that crap out. 2 liters of soda a day + a pizza and energy drinks. That was pretty much my diet for years.

      • The soda and energy drinks are terrible for the body- well made pizza isn’t bad for you-the well made part is the problem. All the chain pizza is crap all the frozen pizza is crap. If you have a local pizza shop that makes e everything from scratch-pizza for dinner a couple times a week is ok if you watch the extra cheese and pepperoni and only eat 2-3 slices of a 12 inch pizza.

        • Pizza now is a “cheat” and only once in a while. Most meals are fresh made with min ingredients.

          What i watch out for is wheat. I also seem to do better without it.

          • Seems every product made with wheat has lots of added sugar-usually via corn syrup. Could be the corn syrup,or the way wheat has been bred so that only a couple strains are grown commercially.
            Breads made from un bleached heirloom strains of wheat flour have a vary different taste and texture.

        • Here’s a great Keto pizza recipe. I follow the crust recipe, but add browned sausage and beef to the toppings, along with diced onions and bell peppers.

          I’ve been on the Keto diet for two months and have lost 16 pounds. I’m averaging close to 30 grams of carbs a day. I was a sugar junkie.

          • There’s added sugar in almost every processed food-usually corn syrup, but that’s still sugar. Your body breaks carbs down into sugars so there’s no need for any extra sugar.

  5. Tedious guy. Grant you he’s not going to die as young as Jim Fixx, but he’s still going to die. I think someone should tell him that. Then he can start loading up on curly fries and krispy kreme glazed.

    It’s why great grandma could eat a “normal” diet and yet have a 20 inch waist after birthing 12 babies. It is why diabetes was very rare in her time. Ground wheat flour (the wheat then was closest to einhorn), sugar, fruits, and tobacco were luxury items-mostly given as gifts or enjoyed once or twice a year. The normal diet was fresh, small, and lean. During the Depression, one chicken served 12 people at my grandma’s table. My grandfather would not eat any chicken that he didn’t see freshly killed. They also enjoyed deer, which is very high protein and lean. My preps include rice-but that is for the dogs -to mix with rehydrated chicken.

  7. Whole foods/traditional diet is, I believe, most healthy and balanced. Weston Price foundation has good info. Nourishing Traditions cookbook by Sally Fallon, based on Dr. Price’s research is quite enlighentng.

    It’s really simple, as I’ve been riding the paleo train for a hot minute:

    Everything on the perimeter of the grocery store is food. Everything on the aisles in the middle is empty-calorie-nutritionally-poor-highly-marketed-sawdust-cough-cellulose-laden-swill.

    The corporate machine can’t market apples, spinach, and chicken quite like it can Tooty-Frooty Bites and Snap-Tarts.

    Simple question:

    Do you want to be a hard-charging Freedom Fighter carved out of stone, or do you want to be a high-drag Frito-Fighter slopped out of jelly?

    Low-carb works. My weight and cholesterol dropped on it.

    I don’t understand why whole strawberries in a smoothie is different than eating them raw. Add some spinach. apple and berries and you have a fiber and nutrient rich concoction. Blender processing and commercial processing are not the same thing.

  12. Wishful thinking for 99% of Americans if any sort of disruption or downturn happens. It’s hard to go high protein or Paleo without petroleum supported agriculture or huge swathes of pasture land (and few competing humans). It takes an awful lot of grass or grain to raise cattle to slaughter weight.
    If you are rural stock ponds might provide highly efficient course of protein. Suburban might look into rabbits. Smaller and quieter than chickens.
    If you are pre insulin dependent diabetic, TODAY is a good day to get off ALL procesded food especially sugars and starches.
    If a slow slide happens many people will go (involuntarily) vegetarian. If full MBZ apocalypse protein will be in the form of long pork on the hoof, er Nike.
